My Favourite Foundations

Hey beauties,

If I got a penny for every time I was asked what foundation I was wearing, let’s just say I’ll be able to buy all the makeup my heart desired lol. Finding that perfect foundation( especially for varied skin tones like us Caribbean girls ) is like finding true love to me. It delights your heart and makes you never want to let go. I’ve been fortunate to find 3 true loves (foundations) in my current lifetime. These are my “go to” foundations after much experimentation and epic failures. In no particular order, because I use them all for different reasons, here are my Top 3 favourite foundations.

1. Revlon Colourstay 24 hrs Combination/ Oily Skin

This foundation is the perfect everyday foundation but it can also be used as a staple foundation for someone who is now getting into makeup. The price ranges from $60 – $80 TTD depending on where you purchase it. It is lightweight but yet buildable for medium to full coverage. It promises to last for 24 hrs but I’ve honestly never worn foundation for such an extended period of time to know if that works. What I can say is that it leaves your skin with a matte finish and the different shades available are known to match your skin perfectly. This is a really great foundation, especially for the price.

2. L’oreal True Match

This is my “night, but not special occasion foundation.” This foundation also gives full coverage with a matte finish. The price range is similar to the Revlon Colorstay ( $60-$80 TTD). The shade matches my complexion well but not as perfect as the Colorstay, if that makes any sense.

3. M.A.C Studio Fix

This is my “special occasion” foundation. I was a bit skeptical about buying this foundation because it is pricey but I can honestly say it is worth it. I purchased this foundation directly from the MAC store last year and it was $250 TTD I believe. Yes it is expensive! It will however last a while and it will give you a flawless finish. A little also goes a long way, so there is no need to be heavy handed with this product. This foundation is also great for person’s with oily/combination skin as it controls shine.

How to Wear a Bold Matte Lip: By Makeup by Michol

The bold lip trend from 2013 is still going strong into 2014; Coral, Fuschia, Cherry Red and Berry are the colours of the season. Matte textures give the look a modern update, however not everyone will feel comfortable in a bold, matte lip, so brightly coloured lip glosses may be an option for you if you are not quite ready to take the plunge.

For a red lip, my general rule is that everyone can wear red lipstick; it’s just about finding the correct shade, to match your complexion. The classic blue red will suit most complexions, but that does not mean a pink red, orange red or true red is not for you.

The 2014 Pantone colour of the year Radiant Orchid is a modern and versatile shade, blending both cool and warm undertones and flattering on all skin tones, trying a lip colour in this tone is a definite must; my personal favourite is MAC heroine.

Dark berry/wine lip colours are actually less in-your- face and are an easier match for most complexions than a true red, but still looks dark, delicious and mysterious!

Whatever the shade you desire, it’s important that the colour stays on. Just like priming the skin for long lasting foundation, create a base for your lipstick to last. Use a nude lip pencil or a coloured pencil to match the shade of lipstick, then line and fill in lips with the pencil.

Apply two coats of your lipstick with a brush for precision and blot with thin tissue paper between each coat to seal in the colour. Precision is key with applying a bold lip colour, so clean up any smudges or uneven lines with a cotton swab and concealer around the lip lines. And be sure to have your lipstick on hand to refresh the colour.

*Tip: Keep other makeup simple and minimal and if you are in a rush and don’t have time for eye shadow, a great trick is to just do a bold lip.

A bold lip will always give you that wow factor, so choosing a bold lip colour is all about the kind of mood you want to evoke, whether it is playful, vampy, elegant or seductive. That aside, most importantly confidence is what wears a bold lip best!

Losing my MAC Virginity

Hello lovelies,

I have a confession . I lost my virginity , my MAC virginity lol. Last month I went to the MAC store in Westmall with one of my girlfriends.  She is a certified makeup junkie so I knew that she would be  the perfect person to take along with me . Initially, I decided that I would only purchase two items ( foundation and concealer ), but I have to admit the sales strategy got to me …it got me y’all lol. As a marketing student I should have known better but as a shopaholic I fell for it hook , line and sinker . So let me just give a synopsis of what happened. I walked in , they sat me down and I looked fabulous afterwards . Let me just say that I wanted every product used on my face  (the only thing I didn’t purchase was the makeup artist lol. )Sigh . Despite the hefty bill , I felt that this was an investment and the products have definitely made a huge difference in my makeup routine. I definitely believe in the mantra ‘Look good , Feel good’ .

MAC Spiked ( Eyebrow Pencil)

I have been searching for the perfect eyebrow pencil and when the makeup artist at MAC used Spiked on me I instantly fell in love with it . I have been using it for the past month and it is definitely easy to use and matches my eyebrow hair perfectly . One tip for using this pencil is  that this is NOT like the typical retractable pencils as it does not retract down , once you retract it up that’s it!

MAC Studio Fix Foundation in NW43

I also picked up what I went in the store initially for lol , the Studio Fix Fluid Foundation . Now the first thing I noticed with this product is that it covered up all my skin imperfections . Honestly there is no need for any concealer with this product . Another thing I noticed is that my shade was not what I expected. I honestly expected to be in the NC family but it seems that I am in the NW family. Upon doing research I found out that NC stands for Neutral Cool and is for skin which has a slight golden glow and NW is for skin which is Neutral Warm , pink beige skin. Now in retrospect when I was born my mother said that I had pink skin so I am still unsure . I plan to ask the MUA at MAC at my next visit . Also when applying this foundation , to me it takes a while to settle and blend into my skin not like my Revlon Colorstay (Caramel) foundation which blends instantly . Here is a pic of me with the foundation applied and as you can see it does eventually blend in.

I also purchased two types of concealers  Studio Finish Spf 35 Concealer . I use this for my eyebrows and I got the Select Moisturecover Concealer in NW 35 for my skin imperfections and under my eyes .

I also purchased the Mineralize Skinfinish Powder in dark. This has to be my absolute favorite product in this haul. This product makes my skin glow . I love love love this product ! Best powder I have ever used.

Finally I got two lipsticks . The ever popular Ruby Woo  which is a matte red lipstick and a lovely fuchsia lipstick from their supreme sheen line called Zen Rose.
